Bodhi Classical Acupuncture

  • Acupuncture

While her passion is using movement to balance the body, Caroline is a skilled acupuncturist and treats many conditions in all ages of patients. She has extensive experience in treating orthopedic conditions, speeding post surgery healing and injury rehabilitation. She has also worked for many years with women during and after pregnancy in collaboration with both doulas and physical therapists. Acupuncture offers safe treatments for the numerous discomforts that arise during pregnancy and helps support recovery after birth.

  • Acupressure

Needles aren’t for everyone. Caroline does ‘Deep Qi’ treatments for her patients who need support for their nervous systems. This gentle treatment helps get the body into a more calm parasympathetic state and is a wonderful support for any health condition aggravated by stress. She also practices abdominal acupressure to support the physiology of the digestive system.

  • Everything Else

In addition to hands on work of acupuncture, acupressure, assisted stretching and manual therapy, Caroline also helps patients with changing their lifestyle to support their health and wellness goals. She makes suggestions with movement, diet, herbal teas and more.

About the practitioner

Caroline Strassberg

Licensed Acupuncturist

Caroline graduated with high honors in 2010 from the Classical Chinese Medicine program at the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR. Prior to her current career in Chinese medicine she worked for the University of Oregon for 10 years as a Child and Family therapist where she offered coaching and support for families in the Portland public school system.  She runs a family style practice and often sees multiple generations in the same family, sometimes all at once.

Caroline practices the older style Classical Acupuncture as opposed to TCM, or Traditonal Chinese Medicine, which was created in the 20th century and is the main style taught in many acupuncture schools. The primary difference between the two being that Classical acupuncture uses a variety of diagnostic techniques to identify the specific imbalance in the individual in addition to their illness or injury and tailors a treatment strategy that treats both the illness and the individual person. Additionally, in Classical Acupuncture the success of the practitioner is dependent on his or her ability to influence a patient's qi by having cultivated a degree of strength and sensitivity in their own. Since 2013 she has been studying qi sensitivity practices, acupuncture and body work with Andrew Nugent-Head, a teacher who learned these methods over the course of more than 20 years living in China.

In addition to studying the Chinese medical classics, Caroline is an avid student of anatomy and movement. Caroline has extensive experience treating physical injuries in all bodies; from elite athletes to the elderly. She has also been treating women during pregnancy since 2012 and has worked in collaboration with a number of doulas and midwives to offer prenatal and post-partum support to mothers.

She is grateful to the many teachers who have generously shared their knowledge and experience with her, in particular Dr Edward Neal and  Andrew and JulieAnn Nugent Head who have made the classical texts come alive in a tangible way and Sifu Gregory Fong who first guided her on the path of martial arts and internal cultivation.

What makes Bodhi Acupuncture unique?

What makes Caroline unique from other acupuncturists is her specialization in treating the sinew meridians [經筋]. She has studied specific techniques to release tension in the fascia. These techniques are more successful than pure trigger point therapy and results in rapid pain relief, greater range of motion and faster healing.

Caroline offers a range of treatment modalities for her patients, from dynamic myofascial release to gentle needle free treatments where she uses acupressure instead of needles. She practices several forms of bodywork, cupping and gua sha, as well as moxibustion.
